Saturday 19th September - Holbourn 2 v 2 Waterloo
McGunigle (MOM) Sweeney McKenzie Lundon Mummery Scanlan Jessop Watkinson Ash (1) Richardson (1) Pen Cooney
Subs McKeating
This week saw Waterloo travel to the salubrious fields of Edge Hill University to take on Holbourn. With the squad a bit thin compared to recent weeks waterloo took to the field with the bare 12. Missing were Kinsella (Vegas), Williams (Spain), Mayne (Prague) and the more mundane Antonio (Knee), Carragher (Ship) and Kirby (God only knows). Anyway The game kicked off to frenetic pace with both side jousting to gain some control. Holbourn had good movement up front keeping the back four busy in the opening exchanges. Waterloo though had the better of the early chances with Ash being put through after good work from Jessup down the right. The resulting shot was saved by the keeper with Ash knowing he should have dine better. Woko was the next to have a chance. Again after good passing and interplay the ball was worked down the left and into to Woko. The chance falling on his weaker left foot and again the keeper saved. Waterloo were competing all over the park Scan And Dave Cooney working tirelessly in the middle with Jess and Kieth offering plenty of support down the flanks. It was Holbourn who took the lead though. Waterloo lost the ball down the right and a swift counter attack saw a long ball splitting the Waterloo defence. The ball was taken by the Holbourn forward and looked to be a certain goal only for Gunny to make a magnificent save and block the chance. The ball ricoched out to Lundon who caught on his heels was robbed by the other Holbourn forward who slotted past the helpless Gunny 1 - 0. Waterloo continued to battle and were well in the game giving the home side plenty to think about. The defence barring that one mistake were keeping the ever rotating forwards in check the the team were creating chances. Half Time 1-0.
The second half started at a steadier pace neither side could get hold of the ball for any length of time. The home side suffered an early set back when one of their danger men limped off with a muscle pull. The constant changes roll on/off subs seemed to disjoint them a bit and that gave waterloo a chance to get back in the game. After several probing attacks Ash and Woko were giving the home side plenty to think about up front. After some good possession the outstanding Mummery split the Holbourn defence with a 30 yard pass the ever alert Ash was on it like a flash just getting a toe on it to divert it past the on coming keeper 1-1. Waterloo grew into the game and started to turn the screw. They should have had a second when a long throw from Jess was flicked on by Swee, Ash at the back post just needed to be an inch taller to get over the ball as his header unluckily went over the bar. Waterloo kept pushing on and had a decent penalty shout turned down. Ash was involved again getting round the full back only to be blocked off as he was going in on goal. The referee saw nothing in the challenge and cruelly the home side broke down the Waterloo left. With the Waterloo defence stretched the resulting cross was knocked in giving Gunny no chance 2-1. The home side lifted by the goal pushed on Gunny making several magnificent saves to keep Waterloo in the game. The defence dug in and tackled and headed every attack that rolled forward. McKeating was introduced and Waterloo pressed on, pushing the home side back, A couple of speculative shots gave the home side a worrying last ten minutes. McKeating receiving a throw from the right swiveled and hit a shot goal bound. Holbourn defender trying to block the shot handled, the ref maybe making up for the earlier denial awarded the spot kick. After casually inquiring about the kick Ash was told in no uncertain terms who the penalty taker was and Richardson dispatched the kick with his trusty left boot 2-2. The game continued but both teams were spent and both welcomed the referee's whistle at the end. Full time 2-2 another very enjoyable game hard fought and fair. Big thanks to Holbourn who played their part. Well done lads.

Well done guys - looks like a hard game. Great report Mr Lundon - makes you feel like you were actually watching...
Ash scores again, what the hell are we going to do when he has to work his 'two in eleven'? Nice one Les, missed seeing your big beaming smile after notching this week.
Gunny MOM - you're only one behind Jessop now mate...
Alsop this week - last year 3-0(H) and 1-1(A)
